PhonePe has rebranded its stockbroking platform Share.Market as PhonePe Invest, with co-founder and Chief Product and Technology Officer Rahul Chari aiming to bring everyday savers and first time investors into the equity market. The move combines the investment platform more closely with PhonePe’s wider financial services ecosystem and introduces new tools to help users build, review and improve their portfolios.
The strategy targets people who already save through gold and mutual funds but have not yet invested directly in stocks. PhonePe is betting that its large digital payments user base can help it reach beyond active traders and make investing more accessible to a wider audience.
“PhonePe Invest” will continue to offer stocks, initial public offerings (IPOs), mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and futures and options (F&O), alongside its new Portfolio Optimiser feature.
- Rahul Chari’s plan to bridge saving and investing
When Share.Market launched, it primarily targeted active traders and experienced investors. Chari now sees a broader opportunity among users who have started building savings through small-ticket financial products but find direct equity investing difficult to navigate.
PhonePe already offers gold and mutual fund investments through its wider platform. According to the company, mutual fund investments can start at Rs 100, while daily SIP options for selected products begin at Rs 10. The aim is to make the transition from saving to investing less intimidating, particularly for customers outside major metropolitan markets.
The shift also reflects a wider change in fintech: attracting customers is only the first step. Platforms increasingly need to help users understand their financial choices and stay engaged beyond individual transactions.
- Portfolio Optimiser aims to simplify investment decisions
PhonePe Invest’s new Portfolio Optimiser is built around three functions: building a portfolio, analysing existing holdings and suggesting potential improvements. The tools are designed to help users assess diversification, understand their investments and identify holdings that may need closer attention.
The platform can provide research-based signals such as hold, monitor or sell. Users can also bring investments held outside PhonePe into a consolidated portfolio view, according to Chari’s comments to the media.
PhonePe is exploring additional AI features, including voice enabled onboarding, multilingual summaries of market news relevant to a user’s watchlist and portfolio, and a chatbot that can answer investment related questions. These features could help reduce the complexity of financial information, though their effectiveness will depend on the quality of the analysis and how clearly the risks are explained.
- Existing customers retain their accounts and charges
The transition from Share.Market to PhonePe Invest does not require existing users to open new accounts. Their demat holdings, balances, watchlists, order history and login credentials remain intact. PhonePe has also said that existing brokerage structures, fee plans and annual maintenance charges will remain unchanged as part of the rebranding.
For PhonePe, the opportunity is to connect its payments and savings ecosystem with long-term investing. But converting everyday savers into equity investors will require more than a new brand and easier-to-use tools. Trust, investor education, transparent fees and clear communication about market risk will be essential to building lasting participation.
