GreenCell Mobility has raised Rs 330 crore in equity funding from Impact Fund Denmark to support plans to deploy around 4,500 electric buses across India. The expansion is expected to take the Eversource Capital backed company's fleet beyond 5,000 buses across 105 cities.
The investment, reported on October 13, 2026, will help GreenCell execute its expansion plans over the next six to eight quarters, according to managing director and CEO Devndra Chawla. The company has not disclosed its valuation following the transaction or the stake acquired by the Danish investor.
- How GreenCell Mobility Plans to Use the Funding
Mumbai based GreenCell operates in the electric mobility-as-a-service (eMaaS) segment, covering intra-city and intercity bus services, charging infrastructure and supporting mobility solutions.
The fresh equity capital will support fleet deployment and the execution of its existing order book. Unlike a business that only manufactures or sells vehicles, GreenCell also has to manage day-to-day operations, including charging, maintenance and driver management.
That makes capital planning important. Buses must be deployed on suitable routes, supported by charging facilities and maintained to meet service commitments. Expansion across multiple cities also requires coordination with transport authorities and other operating partners.
- Impact Fund Denmark Adds to GreenCell's Institutional Backing
The investment follows GreenCell's Rs 800 Cr mezzanine funding round announced in January 2026, backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII) and Tata Capital.
The two transactions use different financing structures. The latest Rs 330 crore investment is equity, while mezzanine financing combines debt-like and equity-linked features. Together, the funding rounds provide additional capital to support a business with substantial vehicle and infrastructure requirements.
Impact Fund Denmark, formerly known as IFU, invests in businesses in developing and emerging markets. Its investment adds to institutional backing for India's electric public transport sector.
- Why the Funding Matters for Electric Public Transport
GreenCell's expansion highlights a key part of India's electric mobility transition: deploying electric buses at scale requires investment in the wider operating system, not just the vehicles.
Electric buses can reduce tailpipe emissions compared with diesel alternatives. However, the overall environmental benefit depends on factors such as the electricity mix, vehicle utilisation and the emissions associated with manufacturing and operations.
For operators, commercial success also depends on reliable service, efficient fleet utilisation and the ability to meet long-term contracts.
- What Comes Next for GreenCell Mobility?
The immediate challenge is to turn the planned deployment of around 4,500 buses into operational capacity over the stated timeline. The pace of deployment, charging readiness and contract execution will be important indicators of progress.
The Rs 330 crore investment strengthens GreenCell's ability to pursue its expansion. Its longer-term performance will depend on whether it can scale reliably while managing the capital and operational demands of electric public transport.
